Arrival in Messenia
A Place of Peace and Tranquility
The west coast of the Peloponnese: one of the most diverse and beautiful landscapes in Greece. Long natural beaches and lush vegetation, such as endless olive groves, characterise this evergreen region. The crystal-clear sea boasts some of the best water quality in Europe. The area sees gentle, independent tourism, where authentic life in untouched nature still thrives. In the surrounding area, you can explore numerous world-famous sights.
Costa Navarino & Golf
Golf of the Highest Calibre
The Costa Navarino is just a 40-minute drive from Villa Camali and currently features four top golf courses: The Dunes Course and the Bay Course. Both are spectacular and are undoubtedly among Europe’s finest. Outstandingly designed with sea views, they are beautifully integrated into the breathtaking landscape and maintained to perfection. Above all, lovers of fast and true greens will delight in playing here.
The Dunes Course, designed by Bernhard Langer, is the first signature golf course in Greece. This impressive seaside course captivates with its enchanting surroundings, lush olive groves, rolling greens, and wide fairways.
The Bay Course is located not far from the Dunes Course and offers an equally unforgettable golfing experience in a different landscape. This course winds along the beach through gorges and olive groves, offering unique views of the sea.
Beaches
Greece’s Longest Sandy Beach Right on Your Doorstep
The crystal-clear Ionian Sea is one of the cleanest bodies of water in Europe and a habitat for the rare Caretta-Caretta sea turtles. With a little luck, you can observe the turtles laying their eggs on the beach between May and July.
The vast sandy beach right on your doorstep stretches for 30 kilometres from Kyparissia to well beyond Zacharo and offers a wide variety of options. From secluded natural beaches to charming beach bars or pleasant organised beaches with tavernas: there is plenty of variety.
Culture
Highlights of Ancient Greece
The Peloponnese is one of the greatest treasures of Greek culture. The Sanctuary of Olympia, for example, was one of the largest cultural centres in Greece during antiquity. According to Greek mythology, this is where even the gods held their athletic competitions.
Olympia
As early as 776 B.C., the ancient Olympic Games were held here for over 1,000 years. From then on, they were held as a national festival every four years in honour of the Olympic father of the gods, Zeus. The Olympic Games connected the Greek world and, with their ideal of noble competition, fostered unity and peace.
The sanctuary lies amid a pristine mountain landscape with a beautiful view of the Ionian Sea. Restoration work is still underway, which is why the temple has been protected by a tent since 1987. However, a visit is still possible and absolutely worthwhile.
Messene
Set in a dreamy landscape away from tourist crowds, this is one of the most important archaeological sites in Greece. Messene, the Messenians’ dream made of stone, was one of the most significant cities of antiquity, with over 30,000 inhabitants. Spectacular finds continue to come to light thanks to ongoing excavations. What makes a visit to Messene particularly interesting is the progressive year-on-year reconstruction, which is carried out exclusively with the original materials found on site. Some visitors come here annually to follow the progress of work on the monuments.
Temple of Apollo at Bassae
In the wild mountainous region of Arcadia, at an altitude of 1,130 metres, the magnificent temple was built around 450 B.C. The inhabitants of Phigaleia, spared by the plague, believed the healing god Apollo Epikourios was responsible. In his honour, they built a temple that is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is likely precisely its secluded location on the edge of a deep ravine that has led to more of it being preserved than most other temples in Greece.
